Quote : | "The concept of ESPN-on-ESPN crime has gone to a slightly different level.
Earlier today, Sal Paolantonio of ESPN reported that the Eagles had offered a position of defensive consultant to former Browns and Jets coach Eric Mangini, who currently works for ESPN. Paolantonio reported that Mangini declined the offer.
Eagles coach Andy Reid thereafter denied the report. Now, Mangini has denied the report, via an ESPN spokesman.
It’s an unusual situation, to say the least. And it gives rise to several questions. Did Paolantonio publish the report without checking with Mangini? Will the report now be retracted?
Hopefully, there will no further developments until I have a chance to get some popcorn ready." |

Peyton would get dealt in that situation as blasphemous as that sounds.
No way they pay him that ridiculous roster bonus March 1st. He's 37 years old, has a chronic neck problem, and there is no guarantee he will ever be the same again. Even if he is you get 2, maybe 3, years out of him before he is done. Not to mention with the market that the Raiders just set with Carson you could get a king's ransom for him.
The smart business decision is Luck in that hypothetical. 10/20/2011 3:15:57 PM |

i don't know if the raiders just "set" the market; they're getting killed for this. no GM wants to make a move like that one, presumably. 10/20/2011 3:22:47 PM |

In your instance, it would be much more likely that he's cut outright. If it was a knee or an elbow, then maybe teams take a chance, because there is a track record of guys coming back from those. But neck injuries scare people, and I wouldn't think another team would be willing to give up anything significant for someone who may never play again, let alone at his previous level. 10/20/2011 3:26:12 PM |

^^ Seems like they would have ~3 weeks to sort that out after the Super Bowl. Hell, Irsay is such a space cadet that he might pay PM the roster bonus then deal him closer to the draft.
I was trying to think of great quarterbacks that started and ended with the same team in the modern era and I can only think of Marino and Elway. Am I missing someone? It seems fairly rare that it happens anymore. 10/20/2011 6:54:28 PM |

Cowherd today:
"You people who think that Andrew Luck is going to get drafted by the Colts and sit the bench for a couple years learning from Peyton Manning are OUT OF YOUR MINDS. Luck will start on day 1, just look at the success Ponder and Dalton have had"
that is paraphrased, but he really thinks that Luck should start for the Colts if he gets drafted there. I know Peyton needs to get healthy and all that, but Cowherd never qualified his argument with that.
yet another example of an espn analyst over-sensationalizing something (see also: Hoge, Merrill) 10/31/2011 1:29:33 PM |
timswar All American 41050 Posts user info edit post |
That is still an if, of course. I mean the Dolphins could get him. Then again, if that happens he might pull an Eli and say he won't play for the team that drafts him.
Hell, he spent another year not getting paid to avoid playing for the Panthers. That should be a huge warning signal for whoever has the number one pick. 10/31/2011 1:46:05 PM |

The only thing I like about ESPN anymore is that they're partnered with the Jimmy V Foundation.
Also, I find it odd that Cowherd and others at ESPN ripped Paterno for not doing more, but ESPN sat on the Fine information. I'm sure DP has had a lot to say about this, but I can't listen to his show most of the time. 12/1/2011 11:40:52 AM |
