^^ I'd like to stay in science. I don't know anything else, really. My skills are specific and I can't transition outside of science that easily. I can do sales rep, but I don't want to. Best I can do in my next search is to find a position that would make me attractive to industry or hospital. A little bit higher pay and stable, and I don't have to depend on grant funds.
My last position( before I was fired recently) was fine. I was there for 7 years until my boss decided to take a job at Baylor. I could have moved to Houston but it would have been a lateral move.
Considered going back to school for PA, but I don't think my heart is in it.
On the flip side, I've always wanted to open up a small ethnic restaurant, but my family isn't supportive of that at all. And I need them, financially. So it's just a fantasy right now. 11/18/2014 11:13:33 AM |

Since you're already being paid like shit, why don't you try getting a job on a restaurant line somewhere (preferably an ethnic place)? Might as well get some restaurant experience if you ever actually follow your dream one day. 11/18/2014 11:36:53 AM |

^^that's actually really good advice. A small (but successful) place would be the perfect opportunity to learn the business inside and out, working all the positions you'd someday have to manage (and probably work yourself). 11/18/2014 12:59:13 PM |

And your family might be more willing to finance your restaurant if you show them some experience in the industry.
Even if I were filthy rich, I wouldn't lend money to a close relative to open a business in an industry they have never worked in (and I'm assuming you don't have any restaurant experience because you've never mentioned it). I'd give money to an accountant to open up a restaurant before I'd give it to a really good home cook. 11/18/2014 1:12:55 PM |

There are 100-count Scantron sheets, and there are 200-count Scantron sheets. With a cursory glance at side one, you might think that they are identical. They aren't and the grader won't recognize them as such; it will throw a "Answer Sheet Does Not Match Test Key" error if it encounters the other. Still, a few times a year, I grab the number of answer sheets I need and learn in the middle of my test that I have two different answer sheets passed out. I swear it's like teachers grab the ones they need and shuffle the rest together. Because reasons. 11/19/2014 1:07:10 PM |

that format of testing is garbage anyways. 11/19/2014 1:09:03 PM |
Byrn Stuff backpacker 19058 Posts user info edit post |
It has its uses. Better question construction, question typing, and varied forms assessment seem to mitigate its drawbacks. For example, I use it for a small portion of my tests and for test that focus more on recall. The rest of the test is open-ended questioning, and each unit has an accompanying project that requires collaboration, performance, or multimedia. 11/19/2014 1:17:55 PM |

well, gg on that front.
most of my teachers used it as their only means of testing. it was pretty worthless. 11/19/2014 1:18:41 PM |

Our CPA firm merged with another local firm in the past year. They brought 5-6 employees and they all moved into our office. It's an old building with old windows and a terrible heating and air system so we've learned to keep curtains closed, don't go extreme with thermostat settings, and just deal with it.
First day the new people were here, one of them turned the air down to 62 (we keep it around 72-73). So of course I turned it up and within 15 minutes, it was back down to the low 60s. Not only do they constantly put the air on that low but they all open their windows and put screens in at the same time. So it's freezing AND it smells like outside in here.
Basically, my workplace annoyance is people that think the workplace temperature should only be at their comfort level without giving a shit about pissing anybody off, even if they're brand new employees in a brand new work environment. 11/19/2014 2:24:42 PM |

Right. If they had gone high 60s, I probably would have just dealt with it. 72 may be warm to some people but like I said, it's worked for the six years I've been here with no problems. 62 is just stupid. I especially think it's stupid when you're brand new to a job. 11/19/2014 2:53:14 PM |

so next time instead of bumping it to 73 (which is extreme), bump it back to 68 or 69 11/19/2014 3:02:09 PM |

72-73 is nowhere close to extreme. Based on a quick google of the topic, it seems like that's a fairly standard temperature. OSHA's "Recommendations for the Employer" says "Temperature control in the range of 68-76 F"

Last year they decided to try and squeeze some pennies out of us by changing the building temp from 68 to 66. Which would be almost tolerable except the HVAC design sucks and there is typically 58-62 degree air blowing out on me all winter. 11/19/2014 3:50:37 PM |

Trying to prevent the inevitable. It's getting annoying. We are working with an active construction site. Things change. Daily. It is impossible to not have updates/corrections coming from the field that need to be reflected in the design drawings. We can't keep changing these drawings and expect to submit the bid set in the allotted time. Just call it pens down and submit it. Updates can be handled in an addendum. I know, I know, you don't like to have addenda... but you will regardless. 11/21/2014 10:45:11 AM |

I don't think I've ever worked in an office that had any control over the temperature, or one with opening windows, so the whole thing is kind of odd to me. If we have complaints about the temperature (happens occasionally, it'll get too hot in summer or winter) we have to call facilities as it's centrally managed from one of the mechanical rooms.
Current annoyance: our awesome cleaning lady left to take a higher-paid job elsewhere. The lady that has been filling in for her sucks...the paper towels both bathrooms out for multiple days, empties the trash cans at odd times or not at all, doesn't put on the coffee in the morning, doesn't seem to "clean" much of anything...hopefully whoever gets permanently assigned will be better. 11/22/2014 1:29:33 PM |

I'm still hung up on someone complaining about the "lady" who doesn't start up the coffee.
Are you personally paying her? That is a maid's job, not a custodian's. Your previous "cleaning lady" went above and beyond. 11/24/2014 10:16:55 PM |
richthofen All American 15758 Posts user info edit post |
You get used to nice things like that. And it's not like she put a new pot on every time it went empty, just one of the things she normally did on her two floors was to start a pot of coffee around 7 AM. I don't get in until 8:30 so the first pot was generally long gone and well into the second, but it was convenient.
It's an annoyance to go from someone who is very good at their job and goes above and beyond just because, to a selection of rotating temporary people who all kind of suck. Absolutely a FWP but if this thread isn't a place to bitch about silly things, then I've been using it wrong. 11/25/2014 12:53:33 AM |
