A win over UNC will give us the warm fuzzies and help ease the pain of the season. But this has been such an incredibly disappointing season regardless of the outcome of that game.

DD will be our coach next year. I know people are frustrated with him but he’s not on the hot seat at all right now. Lose to UNC and finish 5-7, the fan base will be toxic. I don’t know how hot his seat will actually be from Boo and the big boosters. But a big portion of the fan base has made up their mind on DD and nothing short of an ACC title will change their mind.

What good has there really been to see? The exact same problems exist year in and year out. He's got a losing ACC record, losing record in shitty ass bowls, never finished higher than 3rd overall in the ACC, never even sniffed a ACC Champ game.

Only reason he hasn't been fired is he keeps inexplicably beating the Cheats.

^ To be fair, being 4 points shy of winning the game that would have put us in the ACC Conference Championship game last year might count as sniffing it. He's actually come pretty close at least 3 times. Lost the division title to eventual ACC champ Clemson by a TD in 2017. And lost to division champ Wake Forest by a FG in 2021.

I think him not being fired has more to do with putting together one of the longest stretches of respectable football seen at NC State since the 70s. And he has done so while sharing a division with the winningest coach in the history of the ACC.

Compare his 12 seasons here to someone like Frank Beamer's first 12 seasons at VT. Doeren actually has a slightly better win percentage. He's missing the two conference titles, but both of Beamer's titles through year 12 were co-championships. And the co-champion? Fuckin' Butch Davis' Miami Hurricanes.

The good is pretty clear. It’s just not as good as people want and it’s gotten stale, especially set against the negatives that fans see in DD. 11 ish years respectability in football including a few really good years relative to State’s historic level. 6-2 in the ACC doesn’t really happen at State historically. He’s done it multiple times.

The bad has been discussed and I’m not here to argue with it. This isn’t a defense of Doeren. But we don’t have to pretend there’s been no good here. Theres been no great to see. But plenty of good.

He’s definitely “sniffed” an ACCCG. Finishes within 1 game of it 3 times I think.

Don’t really get people that are upset about us going for the TD at the end instead of running the clock all the way down for a FG. We already missed an XP on a bad hold. I realize it should be an easy FG. But I’m good with scoring the TD. Idk

Apparently last week they wanted Waters to go to down at the 1 too. It's an insane take to me, all the things that could go wrong on a FG try, or last week, as crappy as our short yardage offense has been.

Only thing is maybe Dave should have let a little more clock run before calling TO or something, but time is tight and he prob wanted to leave time for options.

Last week makes slightly more sense to me since it was such a long run and so much time left (1:30 left I think). I think it’s a little unrealistic to expect a college player to be smart enough and think fast enough to make that decision in the moment unless it’s something you regularly practice.

But vs UNC, we scored with 25 seconds left. Cant do much better than that. This isn’t the NFL. It’s college players. A lot can go wrong if you try to not score too fast. I think the skill level and experience of NFL players might make that strategy more feasible at that level. I do get questioning his timeout before we punches it in. But even that I don’t hate. You gotta make sure you’ve got the right personnel and are on the same page because a FG is never a definite thing and you don’t wanna botch the snap or handoff or whatever.

His clock management shortcomings are well documented. I just don’t think this end of game situation is an example of it
