2019 was bad. But this run is pretty impressive and borderline unprecedented at State

2017 9-4, 6-2
2018 9-4, 5-3
2019 4-8, 1-7 (bad!)
2020 8-4, 7-3 (weird Covid year and schedule but 70% win% in acc play is great)
2021 9-3, 6-2
2022 8-5, 4-4
2023 9-3, 6-2

5 of the last 7 seasons >.500 in ACC play. And only 1 <.500 ACC record in 7 seasons.

He’s got flaws…but he’s a good coach. Build that man a statue when he retires.

Went out in the offseason with the explicit goal of improving our offensive skill positions. Brought in some fairly highly thought of dudes. And the offense basically looks the same. No reason for us to be so stagnant on offense. No reason for us to be completely unable to run the ball. If we really believe in the new weapons, then make an effort to stretch the field. Put them in a position to succeed and be explosive. I don’t know how much of this is Anae, how much of it is DD with a finger on the scale in terms of offensive identity/play calling/style, or how much of it is McCall being unable to do what we need. But we don’t need McCall to be elite out there. It would be totally fine if he were a game manager type. But he’s not even able to do that so far.

Looking totally incompetent on offense through 2 weeks after an offseason of hearing about how we finally had an explosive offense is pretty disappointing.

I just don't think he can clear the next hurdle. The best he can do is underperform with pretty decent talent, win 9 games with a schedule padded with teams like LA Tech and WCU, then get blown out in a bowl game no one cares about. We're never gong to compete for a conference title with Dave. I don't think it's unreasonable to want a coach who can. I'll give it to him that he can recruit the talent necessary to do it. He's just not a good enough coach to do it.

I don’t think many coaches can reach the next hurdle at NC State. I realize that sounds defeatist. But unlike basketball, there’s no real reason to believe that State has what it takes to go the next level. Assuming “next level” means winning ACC titles and competing near the top of CFB. DD has us a top 30 ish program. Theres like 5 teams that regularly compete at a national title level. Another maybe 10-15 teams that can compete at a national title level but dont regularly do it. Then theres the next tier, which is kinda where we are. If we weren’t in the Atlantic we’d probably have played for an ACC title or two. Probably would’ve still lost to Clemson or FSU. But I guess we could hang our hat on a division title.

I don’t know. I know it sounds defeatist. But I think it would take major changes to get us to the next level. Like, major upgrades to the NIL budget.

DD has shortcomings. But being a consistent 8 win team is pretty impressive at State. He’s kinda established that as a floor.

Have you looked at State football history? What he’s accomplishing is above average here. Winning 9 games regardless of schedule is a major upgrade. And unless you mean literally playing for a conference title, we’ve definitely “competed” for one in the sense that we’ve had October and November games with significant ACC title stakes on the line. We’ve just come up short. And that sucks. Maybe our luck changes with no more divisions.

Dave's best teams in my opinion were in 2017 and 2018 and he couldn't beat fucking wake forest in senior night (2018). We'll never have an OC as good as Drinkwitz again. I don't think good coaches want to work with Dave. If Dave sticks around this is what the offense is going to look like and this is how we're going to play. Mixing forward we're going to look a lot more life the Tim Beck and Robert Anae teams than the better teams Dave has fielded in the past.

Good coaches don’t wanna work with Dave is kinda baseless imo. Gibson is definitely a good coach. And he’s still here. Drinkwitz was a good coach and he left for a HC job. I didn’t love Beck but he left for a HC job. We’ve had plenty of coaches leave for what would be considered promotions/better jobs. So if they’re leaving for better jobs they must be good coaches right? Idk. I don’t buy that at all. I think DD clearly has a style he wants to play and that limits the offense regardless of who the OC is

But you also can't argue with the fact that there's no reason based on Dave's tenure to believe we're ever going to win games like the Tenn game or Clemson game in the future. In fact his history guarantees we'll always be embarrassed. Recognize the fact that we're also going to get out coached in a handful of games against UVA, Syracuse, Wake, Louisville, UNC, BC, and Duke every year and you realize we're a 7-8 win team every year with 9 being the ceiling. Personally I'm getting bored with it.

You also can't argue with the fact that this is a football program with exactly ZERO history of being historically good (not great, good.) It took the best QB we'll ever have and a 13 game regular season to win 10 games one time (and still finish like 4th in the conference lol)

I would argue this generally doesn’t happen. Definitely not “a handful” every year. Giglio had these stats on his Twitter feed the other day.

State is 11-1 (straight up) as double digit favorites since 2020. And 19-4 vs unranked ACC teams since 2020. That’s pretty damn consistent actually.
